Writing First grade has been busy writing! The children LOVE to write, and they love to share their writing with their classmates. In February we focused on opinion writing. Students wrote opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure. Some examples of their opinion writing are "Cats vs. Dogs",(which animal would make the better pet a cat or a dog?) and "If I had Animal Teeth" (what type of animal teeth would be the best and why?) In March, students will write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide some sense of closure. We will start off writing a personal narrative in which the students take a "big idea" (going to beach) and find a "small moment" (surfing a wave) to write about. Students will take their small moment and stretch it out adding many details.
